Michelangelo was proudest of la Pieta. He was able to make marble look like real cloth. I believe Mary is depicted so large because it emphasizes her role as a mother.

Although Michelangelo's David might be more iconic, I really like his La Pieta. Mary is not "lost" in this work like she is in many others. He used a pyramidal structure to draw the viewers eye from one point of the sculpture to another. The figures also appear very natural with sad but serene expressions of their faces.

I think that the precision yet simplicity of the David sculpture is amazing. The lack of distracting elements helps the viewer to focus on the main part of this stunning work of art.

the way he was able to carve these out of a solid block of marble without adding anything is crazy

They were Godlike because they were so big and so lifelike. Being able to make marble appear flowy is truely amazing.

I don't ever think someone will be able to depict a sculpture as "godlike" it's just impossible.

I find it very interesting how they would scale the sculpture back then. How Mary is bigger than a full male makes me wonder what the main reason is behind that

I do agree with Michelangelo when he says that sculptures are "godlike" because when I think of gods I think about large states and sculptures. I guess that is what he thinks too.

I think it's considered god-like because Michelangelo revived the classical sculptural elements of the Greeks and Romans, adding more humanistic characteristics and anatomical

God is considered a "potter" who creates life from clay. The sculptor is considered most "god-like" in Michelangelo's eyes in that they too use clay (a base of the Earth) to unlock the beauty from the stone. Michelangelo always used a single block to sculpt and it's amazing to see how life-like he made these sculptures seem. He truly was a talented sculptor!

I agree with Michelangelo because not everyone can go out to the store and buy a chunk of marble and sculpt one of the greatest creations the world has ever seen. Michelangelo had an amazing talent and we still worship his talents today.

I really like these two sculptures because they look so realistic. I understand why Michelangelo believed sculpture to be godlike. I mean you're creating something amazing and beautiful out of nothing.

^^ well said. I personally like La Pieta more than david. La Pieta is an amazing work of art, and it looks so realistic. I also like that La Pieta has more of a meaning behind it.

The fact that Mary is larger than Jesus shows the godlike quality that is instilled in her in the sculpture and shows her matronly ways as she cares for her fallen son. The enormity of Mary also distinguishes the fact that she is indeed a saint as she made such an impact upon the Christian world.

During this time period, I believe the art of sculpting was a sure sign of being a god because it's extremely difficult and tedious to make sure every little detail is perfect. Anyone with the time, patience, and skill deserves to be praised for their work.

Maybe he felt as if they were god-like because sculptures just watch over everyone and it seems as if they are invincible. They are also so god-like because they are very holy figures with so many stories attached to them. There is so much emotion put into these sculptures that it seems like they are frozen in time, it just makes them seem so incredible.
