This painting is portrait of a murdered French revolutionary leader, Marat. This is one of the most famous images of the revolution. This painting is also very idealized because the painter left out impurities or imperfections, but added additional details like the green rug.

Marat was a French revolutionary leader and radical journalist. He is depicted dead in his bath after being murdered by Charlotte Corday, an enemy of Marat's who blamed him for the September Massacre. JL David uses details from a previous visit with Marat in the painting and focuses the attention on Marat using a simple setup.

Yes, gone are all those details from the Baroque era that could possible "cloud" the meaning or story behind the paintings.

The reason matat is in a tube is that he had to sit in medicated water while he worked due to issues he had obtained during the french revolution
