I really like this painting. The dark hues give off a creepy feel. The light contrast makes it seem like there is a window nearby & that the sun in shining through. The style of this painting is baroque, which is definitely my favorite.

I like the use of the sunlight coming through the window which goes across the peoples faces. The use of chiarscuro is very nice.

I think this painting has a tons of shading and it is very well done. It's a bit dark so I can't really see much that is going on but it sets a nice mood for the painting.

Yeah, Micaela, it is dark and that is actually why it is a bit controversial. We have never seen Jesus depicted in the shadow before. We will talk more about this in class.

Caravaggio makes great use of shadows and shading to make the room appear dark. This puts emphasis on the sunlight coming in.

I really enjoy the different techniques used in this painting. Caravaggio uses line, space, and shading especially well which enables the dramatic effect of this piece of work to come to life. Also, due to the fact that all the people's expressions are different, gives each person their own "identity" and emotion.

Caravaggio does very well contrasting the light and the dark, and showing where the light comes from in a realistic way. i really like this painting.

Caravaggio was very good at making the painting looking very realistic which I think he did through using the light and how it fell upon them as well as using the dark to contrast the actual lighting that the room had.

this painting gives off kind of a dark , mysterious , feeling bceause of the use of dark colors and extreme contrast. You can tell its baroque because they are dressed very nice, and because of the extreme contrast. I like the contrast because it draws your attention to certain people in the room, and makes you focus more on them.

I like the contrast of light and dark which focuses on one main person. I like the hand in the background because we've seen it on the Sistine Chapel. This painting looks very realistic.

It is interesting to me that unlike other religious paintings, Jesus is not in the center. Instead, he is in the shadow. This shows how people during the Baroque period did focus as much on religion.

I find this very intersting that Jesus is not in the center and that hes almost hidden behind one of his apostles. This shows that during this time relgion was a main factor. Also the sunlight helps to show what should be the main focus of the painting.

This painting has a big contrast in the lighting. The sunlight through the window creates the light and the shadows. I dont really like this feature of the painting because the light makes me focus on the window which isnt the focal point.

The focus point of this painting is actually the man that Jesus is calling forward to be his apostle, instead of it being Jesus (which was typical) I like that it appears that the only light in the room is coming in through the window.

This painting is so interesting to me due to the fact that Jesus is in the shadow. In most paintings he is the focal point and in this one he is not as he speaks to the other people. Also it is different on how they are wearing clothing from the baroque timing

Caravaggio exhibited all of the characteristics of the Baroque period in this painting, including extreme contrast of dark and light and making a conscious effort to do something unique and different from the renaissance era. In this painting, this glaring difference is the removal of the focal point from Jesus and onto the common people.

when you first see the picture, your eyes go directly towards those in the light (St. Matthews) and then you'd start to look at the rest of the picture to find that Jesus is in the dark. This shows that in this painting, Jesus is not the focus, also given away by the title "Calling of St. Matthews"
